Case Study – Real-Time Aircraft Fleet Management
From an MVC monolith to a cloud-native, microservice-oriented architecture on Azure, for the real-time management of an aircraft fleet serving civil protection.

Software innovation in the aviation and defense sector
We partnered with a technology player active in the aviation and defense sector, engaged in developing software platforms for the operational management of aircraft fleets. Among the projects delivered, a platform for the Italian National Fire Corps that coordinates thousands of flight missions, rescue operations and maintenance activities across the country every year.
The Challenge
A monolithic application to make scalable and resilient
The existing platform, built as a monolithic ASP.NET MVC application, handled intervention requests, fleet assignment and real-time aircraft assignment. As operational volumes grew, the architecture showed its limits:
- Difficulty scaling individual features independently
- Slow, risky release cycles on a single codebase
- Limited resilience under request spikes or partial failures
- No structured DevOps flows for automated testing and deployment
The Solution
Porting to a cloud-native microservice architecture
Reengineering led the full porting of the platform to a cloud-native, microservice-oriented architecture on Microsoft Azure, contributing both to the internal software architecture design and, as a technology partner, to the design of the production infrastructure on Azure.
- Decomposition of the monolith into independent, scalable microservices
- Design of the internal software architecture and the cloud production infrastructure
- Implementation of DevOps flows on Azure DevOps for automated build, test and deployment
- Real-time management of intervention requests, fleet assignment and aircraft assignment
The Results
A platform coordinating thousands of missions every year
The platform is now operational in support of fleet management for the Italian National Fire Corps, coordinating a significant volume of activity across the country every year:
- Over 9,000 flight missions managed every year
- More than 5,000 rescue operations coordinated
- Over 1,000 maintenance procedures tracked
- More than 8,000 components monitored throughout their lifecycle
