Industrial IoT
.NET 9 Modernization and Cloud Integration for Industrial IoT
From migrating legacy .NET Framework 4.8 applications to .NET 9 to bidirectional communication between IoT devices and the cloud with Azure IoT Hub, for an Italian Industrial IoT solutions company.
The Client
Industrial IoT and real-time location
An Italian technology company develops real-time location systems (RTLS) and Industrial IoT solutions used in manufacturing, logistics and retail: asset tracking, production process optimization, worker safety and real-time flow monitoring. By combining IoT devices and software platforms, it delivers reliable, scalable end-to-end solutions suited to many different industries.
The Challenge
Legacy applications and IoT devices to bring to the cloud
To support the evolution of its software products, the company needed to:
- Migrate legacy applications built on .NET Framework 4.8 to a modern .NET 9 environment
- Build new high-performance, secure and scalable APIs supporting the products' core processes
- Modernize the UI of several web applications with an MVC SPA architecture based on Kendo UI
- Connect next-generation IoT devices to the cloud, with bidirectional communication through Azure IoT Hub and Device Provisioning Service
- Automate releases with modern, resilient CI/CD pipelines, reducing time-to-market
The Solution
Migration to .NET 9 and Azure IoT Hub integration
The goal was to move the applications to a cloud-native, future-proof environment, make the APIs scalable and reliable, improve the user experience and enable centralized IoT device management, while standardizing development and releases. What we delivered:
- Migration from .NET Framework 4.8 to .NET 9, with architectural refactoring and code optimization
- New RESTful Web APIs on .NET 9, designed for high availability and integration with existing systems
- CI/CD pipelines on Azure DevOps for automated, secure build, test and deployment
- Modernized front end with MVC SPA web applications based on Kendo UI
- Azure Functions integrated with Azure IoT Hub for Device-to-Cloud communication, from devices to analytics and monitoring services, and Cloud-to-Device communication, sending commands and configurations to field devices
- Azure Device Provisioning Service (DPS) for secure, scalable IoT device provisioning
The Results
Modern applications and IoT devices connected in real time
The project made the software platform ready to grow alongside the company's products:
- Applications modernized on .NET 9, ready for future workloads
- High-performance APIs with shorter response times and greater reliability
- Better user experience thanks to responsive, intuitive SPA interfaces
- Centralized IoT device management, with real-time data flows and secure provisioning
- Faster, more reliable releases thanks to fully automated CI/CD pipelines
